Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had, and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed. ~ Linda Wooten

Here are Cary Magazine editors' favorite Mother's Day thoughts. Read on, then send us your story for a chance to win a prize!

Amber Keister:

"For Mother’s Day my extended family always gathers to celebrate ALL of us mothers.

"My first couple of Mother’s Days were small affairs spent socializing at a local restaurant, but these gatherings aren’t intimate any more. With marriages and births expanding our numbers, we now meet for a simple potluck meal, and enjoy one another’s company for an afternoon. We share stories, embarrass our children, and speculate on when the next baby will be born.

"Although the 'expected' way to mark this day involves breakfast in bed and pampering from one’s children, I enjoy sharing this day with women who have guided me as I learned to be a parent."

Nancy Pardue:

"One Mother’s Day, years ago, my children made me breakfast in bed. Worried that the toast was cold by the time they spread it with butter and jelly, they microwaved it back to warmth. Yum!

"Now most of our Mother’s Days involve sharing a meal and laughter, simple things I treasure even more now that the kids don’t live at home.

"But Mother’s Day 2003 was unusual, as it was the weekend of my college graduation. Knowing that my children were gathered alongside my own mom, dad and sister out in the audience — who had traveled from out of state to be there, my mom insisting we take part in every part of the festivities, from the president’s reception to touring a campus exhibit of safari animals that I had never known was there — made that diploma walk, and that Mother's Day, extra, extra special.

How do you celebrate Mother’s Day?

Foodies and artists may enjoy sharing a lovely dining experience with their families, or receiving a beautiful item made by a talented, local designer; while others may prefer spending the day at the spa.
