Soup for Syria: Cary Pop-up Dinner Supports Refugees

Proceeds from the "Soup for Syria" pop-up fundraiser this weekend will be donated to the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR to provide urgently needed food relief for Syrian refugees.

Join acclaimed local chefs, bakers and brewers at a pop-up dinner to support humanitarian efforts in Syria. The fundraiser, inspired by “Soup for Syria” by Barbara Abdeni Massaad, will be Sunday, April 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. somewhere in downtown Cary.

“Soup for Syria” by Barbara Abdeni Massaad,is a collection of recipes from celebrity chefs and cookbook authors including Anthony Bourdain, Mark Bittman, Alice Waters and many others.

“At the first of the year we were thinking of creating a gathering for our community to support efforts in Syria,” said Missy Vatinet of La Farm Bakery, one of the event sponsors.

Touched by the ongoing devastation, Vatinet says she was given a copy of “Soup for Syria” by Betty Saleh of Neomonde and the idea of a fundraiser was born. Regan and Dawn Stachler of ChickenWire NC signed on to organize the event, and soon 20 chefs, six breweries and many food aficionados had agreed to lend a hand.

Tickets are $75, with all proceeds benefiting charities and other organizations that work with Syrian refugees. Special “non-alcoholic” tickets are available for $52. VIP tickets for $150 will include an intimate cocktail hour from 4 to 5 p.m. and a signed copy of Massaad’s cookbook, “Soup for Syria: Recipes to Celebrate our Shared Humanity.” Event organizers hope to raise $40,000.

The event is pop-up style, which means ticketholders will receive an email 36 hours prior to the event with location and other details.
