See Efficient, Sustainable Houses on Triangle Green Home Tour

This energy-efficient Apex home was built by Bost Custom Homes. It is certified through two programs: ecoSelect and Duke HERO.

Have you ever wondered what an energy efficient home, packed with the latest green technology, looks like? You have a chance to satisfy your curiosity at this year’s Spring Green Home Tour, starting Saturday, April 24.

This year’s tour will be a hybrid event, with some homes featuring in-person touring for two weekends, April 24-25 and May 1-2. All 18 homes can be viewed online, with 3D virtual tours that will stay live through the end of the year.

Green Building is a whole house approach to new home and remodeling construction that must meet certain standards as defined by a third-party verification system. This verification includes multiple categories including: site & lot design and development, resource efficiency, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor environment & air quality, and the homeowner’s education about the operation of the home and features.

“Homes certified to these superior standards result in healthier, more comfortable, and energy efficient homes,” said Jenny Hoffman, chair of the 2021 Spring Green Home Tour Committee.

The High Performance Building Council of the Triangle, a joint council of the Home Builders Associations of Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties and of Raleigh-Wake County, organized the 2021 event. The Spring Green Home Tour will showcase a variety of green home construction examples at various levels of national certification: National Green Building Standard, ecoSelect, ENERGY STAR, Duke HERO and HERS. Each home in the tour is inspected and third-party verified, making sure it meets the minimum certification requirements established by its specified program.

This Apex home can be toured online, using 3D technology.

“We invite you to visit the homes participating in this year’s Green Home Tour,” said Hoffman, owner and principal designer behind J. Hoffman Studio Design + Build in Carrboro.

“We hope that the ability to interact with the builders and onsite representatives (whether online or in person) while viewing these innovative building practices will give you a greater appreciation of what’s involved in meeting stringent green building requirements.”

With home buyers looking for healthy, efficient, and cost-effective homes, high performance builders are responding to consumer needs. The tour showcases a diverse collection of certified high performance new homes, with links for the public to reach out to building professionals for questions and/or comments. Homes entered in the Tour may be in various stages of construction or owner-occupied. This is a unique opportunity to see firsthand some of the innovative high performance building practices at work in our area.

Visit SpringGreenHomeTour.com starting Friday, April 23, to enjoy the virtual tour which includes an Online Tour Guide and 3D videos of the 18 homes included in this year’s event.
