Cops on Ice, With Brooms. Hmm ?

We call on them in an emergency, and they get the job done. Now let’s see how our heroes do on ice.

The Garner Police Athletic/Activities League, or PAAL, will host its second annual Broomball Fundraiser at the Garner Polar Ice House on Saturday, Aug. 24.

What’s broomball, you ask? Imagine hockey, but with balls and brooms instead of pucks and sticks. And if it's anything like last year’s event, a lot more people falling down.

Taking to the ice will be members of the Garner Police Department, Garner Volunteer Fire-Rescue Inc., and two other area public safety agencies, in a round-robin broomball tournament.

Games begin at 3 p.m., but doors will open at 1 p.m. allowing ticket holders to take advantage of open skating from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. The Garner Polar Ice House is located at 103 New Rand Road in Garner.

There will also be a silent auction and 50-50 raffle, and you’ll have the chance to meet Stormy and the Storm Squad from the Carolina Hurricanes.

Tickets to the Broomball Fundraiser are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 5 to 12; children under age 5 will be admitted free.

All proceeds of the event go to support PAAL programming for at-risk youth in the Garner area.

Tickets are available at the Garner Police Department’s administration offices at 900 Seventh Ave., or at the door on the day of the event.
