Where There’s Smoke, There’s Barbecue

Come hungry for food and fun this weekend, as the sixth annual Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest runs Friday and Saturday in downtown Apex!

Forty-eight teams will be cooking up four categories of ‘cue — brisket, ribs, chicken and pork — as they compete for more than $12,000 in prize money. Watch them work, then see if you can pick a winner as a People’s Choice judge.

Organizer Graham Wilson says his favorite part of the fest is seeing people “enjoying our family-friendly festival, pig races, food and kids area. Also, getting to see all of our familiar cook teams who come back year after year.  It’s a great way to expose people to everything downtown Apex has to offer.”

The Bone Suckin’ Sauce Peak City Pig Fest is the only Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned event in the Triangle, and is part of the World Food Championship. Wilson says new this year is that the KCBS is bringing its Great American Cookout Tour to Apex.

“They only select 20 competitions nationwide, and we are excited they chose Apex this year,” he said. “We’ve also added some new food vendors, and have increased the amount of barbecue for sale. The teams are cooking 1.7 tons of pork this year to sell over the weekend!”

Other competitions to cheer on at the festival include a rib-eating contest on Friday night pitting Apex firefighters against police, and pig races to the finish line on Saturday. Add a beer garden, live music throughout the weekend, a grilling and smoking class, and bouncy fun for the kids, and this promises to be one fun fest.

Finally, on Saturday at 5 p.m., gather around the Main Stage to hear the results of the cook team competition!

Presented by the Apex Sunrise Rotary Foundation, Pig Fest benefits local charities. Wilson says that through Pig Fest and the foundation’s other signature event, Triangle Oktoberfest, it has raised nearly $200,000 for local organizations including Western Wake Crisis Ministry, Alzheimers’ North Carolina, the Miracle League, Operation Coming Home, and others.
