Tie One On at Wake SPCA’s Woofstock

Animal lovers and their canine companions are invited to tie one on and help the SPCA of Wake County and Waste Industries break the world record for Most Dogs Wearing Bandanas.

The attempt will be made at the SPCA’s 19th annual fundraising event, the Dog Walk & Woofstock, on Sunday, May 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Cary’s Booth Amphitheatre.

“We hope that by attempting to break this Guinness World Record, we can bring attention to the importance of low-cost spay/neuter services and help promote pet adoption. Our community has made great strides in these areas, but we have more work to do,” said Tara Lynn, spokesperson for the SPCA of Wake County.

The primary goal of the dog walk is to raise $225,000 to provide medical care, shelter and food to the more than 3,500 animals the SPCA of Wake County rescues each year.

“We looked at several current dog or pet-related titles and chose to attempt to break the title of Most Dogs Wearing Bandanas as we thought this would be fun and achievable with our typical amount of participants,” said Lynn.

Nearly 2,500 people and 1,000 dogs usually attend the event each year. The SPCA will hand out bandanas to participants the day of the dog walk as people enter the venue.

As of this week, organizers were looking to register about 100 more dogs in order to set the record, Lynn said. The existing title is currently held by dotsure.co.za (South Africa) with 765 dogs.

People can join by registering for the walk online at SPCAwake.org/walk. Registration fees begin at $35. Cary Magazine readers can save $10 on their registration fees by using the code “carymag” through Monday, April 30.

The dog walk portion of the event will start at Koka Booth Amphitheatre, wrap around Symphony Lake and end back at the amphitheater, where walkers will be greeted with live music from Jukebox Revolver.

There will be food trucks, beer, music, family fun zones, and a vendor village so participants can browse pet-themed products and services.

And don’t forget the Ruff Races, the dog costume contest and the musical sit contest! Winners of the events will be rewarded with prizes, trophies and big hugs.
