The Face of Freedom

Freedom. It’s the notion that defines our country, but what does it mean to you?

The North Carolina Symphony is offering middle school through college students the opportunity to answer that question.

The symphony’s Freedom! Program honors the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with a photography contest and concert.

Though slaves were granted freedom by the Emancipation Proclamation, a struggle for equality continues. Students are invited to enter a photograph that expresses their vision of the modern-day struggle for freedom, justice and equality in and around their own communities.

Photos may contain any content — people, places or objects. Submissions are due by Jan. 15.

An interdisciplinary education concert for middle and high school students will be held in Meymandi Concert Hall on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. It will explore the movements in the name of freedom, along with the continued struggle to maintain it.

Reservations are available here.
