SmartLipo for the body

Dr. Sandra J. Fearrington of Fearrington Plastic Surgery

SmartLipo is the latest option for safe, effective laser-assisted liposuction. With two laser wavelengths, SmartLipo reduces bruising and increases skin tightening of areas treated with liposuction. Treatment areas include the abdomen, thighs, flanks, arms and neck. Because SmartLipo is a minimally invasive procedure, patients realize natural-looking results with very little recovery time.

Is this an outpatient or in-office procedure?
SmartLipo is an outpatient procedure and is performed in our office.

What type of anesthesia is used?
Oral and local anesthesia is used, allowing the patient to be awake but experience no pain.

How is the procedure performed?
SmartLipo is a three-step procedure. First, the area treated is gently numbed with tumescent local anesthetic. Second, a tiny fiber optic laser cannula is introduced into the fat layer, delivering laser energy that melts the fat. The last step is a small suction cannula that removes the melted fat and fluid.

How is SmartLipo different from the traditional method of liposuction?
SmartLipo includes the use of a fiber optic laser that melts fat and causes less bruising, swelling and downtime. The heat from the laser causes skin tightening, which the traditional method does not offer.

Are there any risks associated with the procedure?
Unlikely risks include burns from the laser, scarring and uneven contour.

How much downtime is associated with the procedure?
Most patients return to work after only a few days. A compression garment is worn for two weeks. Vigorous exercise is discouraged during that time to keep swelling to a minimum.

How much pain can I expect?
Most patients are able to manage their discomfort with over-the-counter medicines like Tylenol; however, pain medication is available.

When will I see my results?
Change is visible immediately after the procedure, but areas treated with SmartLipo will continue to improve for several months.

How much scarring will I have?
Because the incisions are so small and heal on their own, little to no scarring is anticipated.

Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo?
Patients who are in good general health and have struggled to reduce body fat in specific areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. SmartLipo is not a treatment for weight loss, however.

What is the cost of SmartLipo?
Pricing for the procedure depends on the area being treated and starts at $2,500. The procedure is considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance or flexible spending accounts.
