A Garner father and son hit the big screen in Courageous, a faith-based film released nationwide in late September that will soon be available on DVD.

Rusty Martin Jr., 16 years old and a sophomore at Wake Christian Academy, stars as Dylan Mitchell in Courageous alongside writer, producer and on-screen dad Alex Kendrick, who plays the lead role of Officer Adam Mitchell.

Rusty began his acting career at age 7, and has appeared in commercials, films and school productions.

His father, Rusty Martin Sr., retired from the Navy, is a real estate investor and precious metals broker. He’s been acting for five years, and plays factory owner Frank Tyson in the film.

Courageous is the Martins’ biggest acting project to date. The father and son auditioned for their roles from their home, via Skype.

The Martin family, including mom Kim, attends Turner Memorial Baptist Church in Garner.

Courageous debuted as the No. 4 film in the nation, with box office totals of more than $9 million. More than 1 million people saw the film in its first weekend alone.

Courageous is the story of four law enforcement officers, all fathers, who in the face of tragedy must step up to the challenge of being leaders at home.

This is the fourth faith-based film produced by Sherwood Pictures, the film ministry of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga., where filming took place. Sherwood also produced Flywheel, Facing the Giants and Fireproof.
