Get Outdoors and Get Reading!

If you find yourself stumbling upon a page of a story while walking in and around one of Cary’s local parks, congratulations — you have inadvertently stumbled upon PopUp StoryWalk Cary, a fun community program exhibiting recreational reading adventures in our local parks! Scheduled to run monthly from February to December, this ongoing event “pops up” on trails in different locations around town, inspiring families to get outside and read their way along the trail.

The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT, and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. There are now StoryWalk® installations all over the country, but we have Cary resident Caroline Laski to thank for collaborating with the Town of Cary Parks & Recreation and bringing the fun to Cary.

“I don’t know who was having more fun, me or the kids,” writes Laski, who first experienced a StoryWalk® while living in Washington state. “We rambled all along this gorgeous afternoon sunlit path, fully encompassed by nature, and found ourselves instinctively hungry for the excitement of hunting down each page of the story. It was truly unique — something magical, memorable, and worth sharing with more families.”

A new story will pop up every three weeks, so be on the lookout! For a current lineup of events, visit the Town of Cary’s website or follow them on Facebook. This month’s story is “Can a Critter in a Hat do That?” written by Nancy Armstrong and illustrated by Becky Holley (a local to Cary)! This pop-up installation is located at Carpenter Park and will be up through Feb. 27.
