Cary: Where Stars are Born

Who needs Broadway when you can enjoy Cary’s very own talent close to home?

Starting this weekend, the Cary Players will perform An Evening of Possibilities by world-renowned playwright, Mark Harvey Levine at the Cary Arts Center.

It may come as a surprise, but the production company relies completely on the talent among those in Cary, so you may recognize some familiar faces onstage.

The play consists of several short pieces from Levine’s work, and this particular production will mark as Levine’s 1,000th performance. His stories are known for revealing a light touch, a wicked sense of humor and a knack for using paranormal events to cast a new light on normal ones.

The performances will take place Jan. 31-Feb. 2, and Feb. 7-9, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 3 p.m.

If you are looking to join the Cary Players, there are plenty of behind-the-scenes, volunteering and onstage opportunities. For those interested, the company begins auditions for its next performance, The Odd Couple, during the first week of February. Visit caryplayers.org for more details.

If theatre isn’t your strong suit, there are other ways to get involved in the Cary arts scene: The Cary Town Band and Concert Singers, for example, which are always looking for people to join upcoming productions.

The Cary Town Band operates as the official town band, playing for holidays, festivals, grand openings, and other town events.

The process of joining is simple, informal and open to anyone who shares in the interest of playing music. The band is currently looking for players in all sections but especially for cornet, trombone and percussion. Visit carytownband.org for more details.

For local aspiring vocalists, the Concert Singers of Cary may be a perfect fit.

There are four different vocal groups you can join within the Concert Singers: Concert Singers of Cary Symphonic Choir (125-135 voices), Concert Singers of Cary Chorale (70 voices), Concert Singers of Cary Chamber Choir, and for those looking to start a career in music, the Concert Singers of Cary Choral Artists: Professional Choral Singers.

The Concert Singers perform various concerts with the N.C. Symphony along with four annual concerts that vary in musical style. To join one of the groups, visit concertsingers.org for details.
