Runway Fashion Show at NCMA

Oct 28, 2017 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

What: Opening night Runway Fashion Show and Dance Party for special exhibition Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair

Where: East Building, North Carolina Museum of Art, 2110 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh

When: Saturday, October 28, at 8 pm

Attitude. That’s what it takes to rock the runway, and we’ve got tons of it to open our new exhibition, Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair. Watch our runway show of juried designs by North Carolina’s rising designers, including fashion and design students from Appalachian State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, and UNC–Greensboro, competing for cash prizes.

The original designs, inspired by ensembles in the Inspiring Beauty exhibition, are worn by Raleigh’s FUSE models with makeup and hair design by Raleigh’s Taji Hair Salon.

Designers include Sarah Rose Bischoff, Jessica Crabtree, Abbie Doss, Brittney Gray, Desiree Hedrick, Rang Li and Wen Li, Victoria Luong Vu, Wilhelmina Mends-Cole, Carly Owens, Wes Rowe, Laura Wyker, and Samantha Young.

Runway show judges will award their favorites, and former Fashion Fair commentator Audrey Smaltz introduces the designs. Durham native André Leon Talley, former Vogue editor and fashion celebrity, and former Ebony Fashion Fair models will attend. After the runway show and awards, attendees may take the dance floor and walk through the exhibition with music by DJ Zensofly.

Tickets are $25 for Museum members and $30 for nonmembers, and can be purchased online.

Related event: A Conversation with André Leon Talley takes place Sunday, October 29, at 6 pm in the Museum’s SECU Auditorium. Fashion icon André Leon Talley became a household name as an editor for Vogue and a judge for America’s Next Top Model. Few may know that Talley is originally from Durham and was fashion editor of Ebony early in his career. He shares behind-the-scenes stories of his days at Ebony Fashion Fair. He will chat with Audrey Smaltz, the voice of Ebony Fashion Fair for seven years and founder of The Ground Crew backstage management corporation. Wine and cheese included. Tickets available online.

About the exhibition: A spectacle of glamour and performance, the traveling fashion show grew out of the pages of Ebony magazine. Far more than a display of fabulous clothes, the show offered black women a vision of what they could wear and, ultimately, who they could be. Featuring 40 ensembles, the exhibition includes works by designers such as Stephen Burrows, Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Givenchy, Patrick Kelly, Christian Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Bob Mackie, Alexander McQueen, b. Michael, Missoni, Jean Patou, and Vivienne Westwood. The exhibition runs from October 28, 2017, to January 21, 2018.
