The Cary community has the opportunity to witness some truly talented golfing and indulge in activities ranging from good food to quality exercise, at SAS Championship events next week.
The tournament returns to the Prestonwood Country Club Oct. 7-13, and with new additions like Food Truck Friday and the WakeMed Families First Fun Fest, “We’ll have plenty of excitement on and off the course,” said tournament Director Jeff Kleiber.
With a seasoned group of eight hall-of-famers, 15 Champions Tour winners, and a purse value of $2.1 million, the stakes are high this year.
“We have a very talented and competitive group of players, which should make for some great golf action in the Triangle,” said Kleiber.
A few Champions Tour rookies will make their debuts in the tournament, including Bart Bryant, John Riegger, winner of the local Rex Hospital Open, and Colin Montgomerie.
Montgomerie, who was also inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame this year, will be serving some stiff competition alongside other hall-of-famers including Hale Irwin, Nick Faldo, and defending champion Bernhard Langer.
Food Truck Friday will take place on Oct. 11, after the first round of the official Champions Tour. A variety of food trucks including American Meltdown, Sweet Traditions, Pie Pushers, Chick-N-Que and Chirba Chirba will be serving food beginning at 4 p.m.
“Food Truck Friday will be a great way to kick off the weekend; fans can enjoy some of the best local trucks in the Triangle, take part in our Blue 5K on Saturday, or watch great golf at one of the best courses in the area,” said Kleiber.
The Blue 5K at the SAS Championship, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, will return on Saturday, Oct. 12, allowing participants to run the back nine holes of the tournament course before the start of the second round.
All runners will receive a commemorative shirt and admission to the tournament.
Following the race will be the WakeMed Families First Fun Fest, designed to be “interactive and entertaining” with kid-friendly activities including a Teddy Bear Clinic, bounce houses and face painting — all free to the general public.

Parking for the events is free and available at Bond Park in Cary. Complimentary shuttle busses will provide transportation to and from the parking area.
“This tournament is all about the community, and there’s really something for everyone to enjoy, so we invite everyone to come out,” said Kleiber.
