Guns ‘n’ Hoses

Where can you find police officers and firefighters, playing broomball on ice?

At Guns ‘n’ Hoses, of course!

Get ready for a unique event in Garner, as the town’s police and fire departments take to the ice in a broomball fundraiser to benefit the Garner Police Athletic and Activities League, or PAAL.

Set for Saturday, Aug. 25, at 3 p.m., Guns ‘n’ Hoses will take place at the Garner Polar Ice House, located at 103 New Rand Road. The event will also feature appearances by the Carolina Hurricanes mascot, Stormy, and members of the team’s popular Storm Squad cheerleaders.

The fundraiser will also include a silent auction from 1 to 4 p.m., with Carolina Hurricanes memorabilia, gift certificates from area businesses and restaurants, a 50/50 raffle and more.

“We are thrilled with the support of Garner PAAL to date,” said Garner Chief of Police Brandon Zuidema. “We have completed our first full school year of programming and look forward to adding additional activities and students based on the funds we anticipate raising from the broomball game.”

A free program open to interested boys and girls with Garner ties, PAAL’s mission is to influence youth for good, for their benefit and that of the entire community.

Garner kicked off its PAAL program in 2010 in partnership with East Garner Middle School, as the first PAAL chapter in Wake County, and is working to expand to all secondary schools in the area.

“The vision of PAAL is to reach kids not just one time, but to stay with them long term,” Zuidema said. “We want to continue to be an influence and be a part of their lives.”

Guns ‘n’ Hoses tickets are $10 per adult, $5 for children ages 5 to 12, or $25 for a family ticket, and include a free ice skating session at the Ice House from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m. that day. Children younger than 5 years are admitted free.

Tickets are available at the Garner police station, located at 900 Seventh Ave., the Garner Volunteer Fire-Rescue station at the corner of Main Street and Benson Road, or at Polar Ice House the day of the game.

Garner PAAL is a 501(c)(3) organization; all proceeds from Guns ‘n’ Hoses will go directly to programming for area youth.
