Event Description:
Join Joseph Horowitz and baritone/actor Kevin Deas for an engaging look into the life of African-American composer Henry “Harry” Burleigh. Known for his art songs and arrangements of spirituals, Burleigh was also Dvorák's assistant in America and helped to bring that great African-American music into the concert hall. Kevin Deas performs and talks about the hidden meaning of plantation songs. You’ll also hear a recording of Burleigh himself singing “Go Down Moses.” FOLLOWED BY A master class with Kevin Deas.
