Two Wheels, One Great Cause

Ah, the freedom of a two-wheel ride on a sunny summer day — the only thing that can make it better is knowing the ride benefits a good cause.

The first-ever Ride for Abilities offers an invitation to local bike fans and supporters, in a fundraiser for Garner nonprofit Able to Serve.

The faith-based nonprofit was founded in 2003 to help fill a post-high school void often faced by special needs adults, with the goal of helping them achieve their best and offer meaningful contributions to their communities.

“We often help or minister ‘to’ people with special needs, not ‘with’ them,” said Able to Serve Executive Director Carlton McDaniel. “And realistically, it’s easier and quicker to use the institutional model, where I do it for you.

“But my friends at Able to Serve have taught me that life isn’t just about doing — it’s about being. Being who I am, contributing what I have, to a community that values what I have to offer.”

Hugs and handshakes are offered to the tune of “Thank You for Being a Friend,” by Able to Serve members Mark, Joseph and Kenny at a recent meeting. Top right photo, Teresa Champion leads the group in singing and signing.

Ride for Abilities is set for Saturday, June 30, with registration and check-in from 8 to 10 a.m. at Able to Serve, located at 157 Technology Drive in Garner.

The self-directed ride will continue to its midpoint at First Baptist Church of Sanford, 202 Summit Drive in Sanford, where snacks will be provided.

The ride concludes at Team PowerSports, located at 222 U.S. 70 East in Garner, where lunch will be served and a live band will perform. The day will also include door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

Ride for Abilities entry fee is $20, and $5 for an additional rider. For more information, visit www.abletoserve.org or contact McDaniel at (919) 779-5545.

Upcoming Able to Serve events also include a Gala Dinner on Sept. 14 and Golf “Fore” Special Needs on Oct. 5.
