One A Week: Take the Cary Fit Month Challenge

It’s Fit Cary Month!

Full of for-all-ages fun, Fit Cary Month means that throughout the month of April, the Town of Cary will offer hundreds of programs, classes, events and resources to help us all get — or stay — a bit more fit.

“I don’t know who I would be without dance and running in my life,” said Sarah Preston, Town of Cary performing arts/operations coordinator. “I think there is a physical and social link between fun and fitness. Not only has physical fitness been known to increase endorphins within us, which can increase happiness, but fitness can also build social circles and communities.

“When people participate in sports, fitness classes and even arts classes, they develop passions and a community of people to share those passions with,” she said. “This helps makes individuals and communities complete.”

The challenge of Fit Cary Month is for each resident to take part in one fitness or wellness activity each week, and to invite family and friends to join you.

Grown-ups can swim, row, try Gentle Yoga, cardio kickboxing or go “Movin’ & Groovin.'”

For the younger set, opportunities range from Bounce, Spring & Boing for tiny tots, to disc golf, baton, hip-hop and even fencing for older kids and teens.

“It’s very simple for families to take part in the various activities our department offers,” Preston said. “For free events, simply show up! And for those programs where registration is required, you can register online or visit one of our facilities to sign up.”

Or, pick up a brochure at a local community center, arts center or the Cary Senior Center.

Kicking off the fitness fun is a signature event, the Cary Road Race. Set for this Saturday, April 5, the 10K, 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run all take place at Koka Booth Amphitheatre.

Here's the schedule:

Awards will be presented 30 minutes after the finish of each race. Recreational runners and baby strollers are also welcome.
