Best High School Coach

Britt Morton, Apex High

The good ol’ black and gold clinched top spot as Apex High Cougars coach Britt Morton won the Maggy vote. The news came as a surprise to Morton, who says he loves coaching the Cougars at his alma mater, where his wife is also a teacher.

Morton’s stats:

At Apex, now: Head JV football coach; varsity football defensive coach; teaches weight training and conditioning classes for athletes

At Apex, as student: Played quarterback, running back, outside linebacker
First played football: Age 7, for Apex Recreation

College: All-American outside linebacker at Methodist University

Most exciting win: In 2008 playing Hoggard High in Wilmington, in the second round of the playoffs, rated as the major underdog. “We blocked a punt for a touchdown to win the game and send us to the third round of playoffs for the first time in school history!”

Proudest coaching moments: “When our seniors walk across the stage to receive their high school diploma, and have goals to become successful gentlemen in our society. Also, when players come back and keep us informed on how they’re doing, and support Apex athletics by attending athletic events.”
