Cocktail Cool

It’s HOT.

But don’t sweat it — have a cocktail instead!

Here are recipes for two fresh-fruit cocktails to keep you refreshed and happy during the heat wave, dreamt up by the mixologists at Bonefish Grill.

Fresh Watermelon Martini

1.5 ounces of your favorite vodka

2 cucumber slices

2 cubes fresh watermelon

¼ ounce simple syrup

½ ounce fresh sour mix

Combine the watermelon cubes, cucumber slices and simple syrup in a glass and muddle well. Add your favorite vodka, and fresh sour mix. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with frozen watermelon cubes or a fresh cucumber slice.

Summer Kiwi Smash

The Smash is a classic, dating back to the 1860s.

1 ½ ounces of your favorite tequila

3 slices kiwi

5 mint leaves

½ ounce simple syrup

½ ounce fresh lemon juice

Combine the kiwi, mint leaves and simple syrup in a glass and muddle well. Add your favorite tequila and fresh lemon juice. Shake and strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Garnish with a fresh kiwi slice.

A Smash has four main ingredients: Spirit base, seasonal fruit, sugar and mint or another herb. Try these combos to get creative:

Strawberry or watermelon with basil, and vodka or gin instead of tequila.

Blackberries, mint and rum.

Mango, basil and bourbon.

Shake It Up Tips:

Make your own refreshing cucumber or watermelon vodka! Slice cucumber or watermelon, place in your favorite vodka and allow to infuse for 24 to 48 hours.

Like your cocktails on the sweeter side? Add a bit more simple syrup.

Prefer margaritas? Substitute tequila for the vodka, increase sour mix to 1 ½ ounces, shake and strain over ice into a glass with a salt rim.

Add wow factor: Garnish drink with an edible flower.

Chill: Add crushed ice to either cocktail to turn it into a frosty treat.
