Art & Cuisine

Steven Deveraux Greene, executive chef of The Umstead Hotel & Spa, and a team of all-star chefs join contemporary artist Beverly McIver for Expressions V. A Celebration of Food and Art on Friday, Nov. 20 at the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary.

This unique event raises funds to benefit children and families who receive mental and emotional health services from the Lucy Daniels Center in Cary, now marking its 25th year.

“I love being able to express myself through the food I create and often find solace in cooking,” said Greene. “There is a healing process that takes place in all forms of expression and the encouragement and support the Lucy Daniels Center shows children allows them to do so. Being a new father, I understand now more than ever the importance of that kind of emotional support they provide.”

In this marriage of art and cuisine, the chef team will create a multi-course meal inspired by McIver’s chromatically rich artistry, and complemented with expert wine pairings.

McIver, a well-known figure in the art world, was named among the Top Ten in Painting by Art in America, and in 2011 was the focus of an Emmy-nominated documentary, “Raising Renee,” about her experiences caring for her mentally disabled sister.

She is the Ebenshade Professor of the Practice in Studio Arts at Duke University, and her works are in the collections of the N.C. Museum of Art, the Weatherspoon Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Mint Museum.
